Her View

Seattle - Caywood's perspective

Seattle: home to the best farmer’s market ever! And another city that surprised me. Seattle was on our list as a potential city to move to, but we both immediately thought it would get kicked off (weather being one of the various reasons). I was surprised how much I liked Seattle! It was a big city with a small city feel, lots of great local places to eat, and tons to do. We arrived in Seattle and planned to see the Space Needle first. Since it was $16 per person to get in, and we’ve seen tons of sights from up high on our trip already, we decided we were both good with looking and snapping some pictures from the ground below. After doing so we walked around downtown as well as Seattle Center, which is home to their kids museum, a beautiful fountain that syncs with music playing all around, and a huge amphitheater.

After walking around for a while we ate at a great Korean restaurant, Shilla. We were craving a bibimbop and found a Groupon for the restaurant, so we thought we’d give it a try. So glad we did! The Korean food was amazing. We started with sake and edamame as usual, and both ordered bibimbaps (mine with a ginger salad and Feliks’ with his beloved miso). Little did we know that every Korean dish at this restaurant automatically comes with seven small appetizers, ranging from spicy cucumber to sautéed mushrooms to Korean potato salad. We had some of these on their own, and saved some to add to our main dishes.

Unfortunately we had to leave Seattle first thing in the morning due to our plans in Vancouver the next day, but we were able to come back through Seattle after we finished up at Vancouver. We went to the first ever Starbucks, then headed down to Pike’s Place Market. Maybe one of my favorite places on earth! The fish smell was hard for me to handle; however, being a foodie I can appreciate all fresh and healthy food, even if I don’t particularly like it. There was so much food here, including some organic. Fresh fruits and veggies lined both walls both inside and outside of the building. Inside, the lower levels of the market also had shopping stores. There were also vendors selling food, coffee, cheeses, fresh baked bread, etc. I LOVE THIS PLACE. If Seattle wasn’t so far away from anything and everything I know, I think I could really enjoy it here. Well, maybe not so much in the winter.

His View

Seattle - Feliks' perspective

First of all, Seattle’s location is by far one of the coolest. Surrounded by water East and West, it was almost like a country of its own. The downtown was gorgeous, and definitely still growing. At least, the eleven cranes in the skyline gave me that feeling. Our adventure in Seattle began with a visit to the Needle, and a tour around Seattle Center. Our dinner took place at a local Korean restaurant to satisfy our craving for bibimbop. Not only was the bibimbop delicious, but they also brought out a dish of random appetizers like kimchi, pickled radishes, spicy bean sprouts, pickled mushrooms, and a couple other various items. We had so much food that I actually had three meals of left overs the following few days.

We had to hold off on Pike Place Market until after we got back from Vancouver, but let me tell you - one of the best farmers markets I’ve been to so far. Better than Boulder, Colorado. They had everything you could think of from bacon to salmon, crabs, fruits, vegetables, olive oils, breads…you name it, it was there. And I do remember the flying fish stand from the Food Network, which was really cool to see. Needless to say, we got some stuff for the fridge and grabbed some lunch at Mr. D’s Greek Deli. I love taziki sauce.

Overall, Seattle was bad ass. Huge city, lots to do, and I would probably be at the farmer’s market every other day. The roads were good. There were some parts where you’re at a 45 degree angle uphill at a stoplight, which can get a little hairy…especially when there’s a manual transmission car in front of you. So watch how close you get to people. Parking was decent, even though we were there during work hours. Parking was really expensive.
