Pembroke- Caywood's perspective

Pembroke, Virginia: a city of mountains. We drove to Pembroke and met up for a hike with Lance, a friend from Memphis who recently moved to Roanoke. The drive up the mountains of Pembroke was breathtaking. The hike we went on was Cascade Falls, a two-mile hike each way to a beautiful 69-feet tall waterfall. This was the first mountain hike for both Feliks and myself! Mental thought: glad we didn't chose to do the other recommended hike that was 8 miles long! We will get there, but this hike was great for our first one. The scenery was beautiful; we seriously felt like we were in Lord of the Rings at times! The entire hike was along a stream - great views of the water and its trout, the largest rocks I've ever seen (see pictures below), many trees with little love notes on them (also see pictures below).

Suggestions for mountain hikes:

1. This is obvious. Be sure to take water and a few snacks. Hiking takes it out of you!

2. If your hike leads to something beautiful like a waterfall, be sure to also pack a lunch so you can have a picnic in front of the gorgeous scene around you! We failed to bring sandwiches on our hike.

Pembroke- Feliks' perspective

The hike to the waterfall was amazing - my first true nature hike through the mountains. We walked along the creek, and with every step the scenery changed to reveal a more magnificent view. Some parts were easy, some parts were hard, but it was great exercise. Two miles later we arrived at Cascade Falls, which dropped into a small pool prime for a hot day's swim. The water was a little cold so I chose to stay dry and watch the other people as they emerged with "holy crap this water is cold" faces. We took the easy way back - just as scenic, but the sound of the rushing water made the whole hike very peaceful and relaxing. Can't wait to do more hikes later on this trip.
