Her View

Lexington - Caywood's perspective

Lexington: a city of family. We didn't really do any tourist things in Lexington; we mainly went there to visit some of my family. I actually grew up in Lexington until I was 9, so I've been there many times, and Feliks and I visited just two years ago.

We had an absolute blast in Lexington. It was so great to see some family members I don't get to see very often, and it was our first time seeing them since it became official that Feliks will become part of our family soon!

We went to dinner at a great local place that I definitely would eat at again and recommend to you all - Saul Good. Pulling up to this place I laughed a bit because their awnings are zebra. But that didn't mean a thing! Inside the restaurant it was very nice. Their menu had a great selection of too many good foods, and at great prices. I got their speciality pizza and Feliks got a blue cheese burger. Both of our meals, along with everyone else at the table's meals, were amazing. Great service, great food, great atmosphere. Go here!

The family we got to see while in Lexington were Aunt Cathy, Aunt Con Con, Uncle Mac, cousin Noelle and her husband Russ. We had a blast visiting with them over dinner and getting to walk through the house that my Aunt Cathy and her husband are building.

On the way out of Lexington we drove through downtown, then did the entire Kentucky Bourbon Trail on the way to our next city. The KY Bourbon Trail includes eight distilleries around the state. We completed about half of them when we visited two years ago, but wanted to do the entire trail so we could get the free shirts! (FYI, once you complete the trail you have to send your passports in the mail and the shirt will be mailed to you 4-6 weeks later. This was a disappointment.)

The Bourbon Trail was fun. Since we had done quite a few tours the last time, we skipped out on all of the tours except for one. Some we did the tastings at and some we didn't. I was surprised to find out that a lot of them (more than I remember from two years ago) charge for their tours/tastings. And most of them you cannot do the tasting without doing the tour. The tours range from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the distillery. I would definitely recommend doing this, even if you're not a bourbon drinker. I am not. But it's fun to see the distilleries and learn a bit along the way. Most people think Bourbon has to be made in Kentucky, but this isn't true. Law says Bourbon just has to be made in America, but about 95% of it is made in Kentucky. Bourbon cannot be flavored and no artificial coloring can be added. Bourbon must be made in a virgin barrel, and must be made of at least 51% corn. There's your history lesson for the day!

Lexington - Feliks' perspective

We didn’t really do a whole lot in Lexington. The stop was mainly to see Caywood’s family - her Aunt Cathy, Connie, Uncle Mac, her cousin Noelle and her husband Russ. Not a whole lot to report from Lexington, but I did have a delicious blue cheese burger at Saul Good. Caywood did not find my “It’s saul good” joke very funny.

We did start the Kentucky Bourbon Trail in Lexington. The first distillery is downtown, and so our bourbon tastings began. We did the trail a couple of years ago but never finished it, and since we were here we weren’t going to make that mistake again. One after the other we started knocking them out as we made our way towards Louisville. While we didn’t finish them all in one day - I personally don’t think it’s possible - we did get about half of them done before getting to Louisville around 5pm. If you’ve never done the trail before, it’s pretty cool… even if you don’t like bourbon. Most of the distilleries open at 10, and each tour is almost an hour and cost between $5-10 per person. You can cut that time if you tell them you only want to do the tasting. Because let’s be real - there’s only so many ways to make bourbon. Don’t forget to get a passport at the first distillery so you can mail it in for a free t-shirt when you’re done. If you pick up the map, google the distilleries first because that thing is not to scale. Don’t worry about getting drunk, because you’re usually limited to 2-4 tastings per distillery. I would recommend doing the tour at a couple of them, as some of their stories are actually really cool.

Overall, I got nothing to report besides the bourbon trail was awesome.
